Deleting Your Account
Everything you need to know before, during, and after deletion.
How to delete your account
Go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. You'll need to confirm your password first.
Before deleting, the app scans your account and shows you everything that will be affected — your groups, outstanding balances, friends, and financial units. Nothing happens until you explicitly confirm.
Two paths to deletion
If all your balances are settled (recommended)
If you don't owe anyone and no one owes you, deletion is straightforward. Your personal data is erased and shared expense records are preserved as “Deleted User.” One tap and you're done.
If you have outstanding balances
You have two choices:
Settle first, then delete. The app walks you through settling all outstanding balances. Once everything is at zero, you can delete cleanly. This is the fairest option for everyone.
Delete anyway. If you choose to delete with outstanding balances, here's what happens: any money you owed is written off — the people you owed will be notified and their records updated. Any money owed to you is forgiven — the people who owed you no longer need to pay. Everyone affected is notified.
What happens to your data
Permanently deleted
Your email, phone number, password, login credentials, profile photo, notification preferences, personal budgets, and security settings are permanently erased.
Shared expenses stay (sorry, we can't nuke those)
We'll delete your personal information, but we can't delete your shared expenses — that would be catastrophic for everyone else in your groups. Your identity in shared records becomes “deleted ccount user” 🫡 Just kidding, we love you. But seriously — other people's financial records depend on those expense entries, so they stay in anonymized form.
30-day grace period
After you confirm deletion, your account is immediately deactivated — you can't log in. But your data isn't erased yet. You have 30 days to change your mind by emailing support@ccount.app. After 30 days, the deletion is permanent and irreversible.
Download your data first
Before deleting, you can download a complete export of all your data — every expense, settlement, group, and personal record. The app offers this on the deletion confirmation screen.
What your friends see
Your friends and group members receive a notification that you've deleted your account. In their expense history, your name is replaced with “Deleted User.” Their balances are updated accordingly — either settled (if you cleared everything) or adjusted (if debts were written off or forgiven).
Groups and admin roles
If you're the only admin of a group, the next longest-standing member is automatically promoted to admin. If you're the only person in a group, the group is deleted. Your financial unit membership is dissolved, and the unit lead role transfers to the next member.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete my account if I owe people money?
Yes. You can either settle your balances first (recommended) or delete anyway. If you delete with outstanding balances, the money you owed is written off and the people you owed are notified. This isn't ideal for them, so we recommend settling first.
Can I delete my account if people owe me money?
Yes. If you delete, debts owed to you are forgiven. The people who owed you will be notified that they no longer need to pay. You lose that money. Consider settling first.
What does “written off” mean?
When you delete your account while owing someone money, that debt is erased from their records. They can no longer collect it. Their balance updates to reflect the loss. It's recorded in the group activity as “Deleted User's debt of $120 has been written off.”
Can I undo the deletion?
Within 30 days, yes. Email support@ccount.app and we can reactivate your account. After 30 days, your personal data is permanently erased and reactivation is not possible. You would need to create a brand new account with no connection to your old data.
If I reactivate, do the written-off debts come back?
No. Debt write-offs and forgiveness are permanent. They were already communicated to the other people. If you reactivate, your account is restored but those specific balances remain at zero.
What happens to expenses I paid for?
They stay in the group. Other members' shares and balances remain intact. The expense just shows “Paid by: Deleted User” instead of your name.
What happens to groups where I'm the only admin?
The app automatically promotes the next longest-standing member to admin. If you're the only person in the group, the group is archived.
Can other people still see my past expenses?
They can see the expense details — amount, date, category, split — but your name appears as “Deleted User.” Your email, phone number, and personal details are not visible.
What about my ad-free subscription?
Your subscription ($0.99/mo or $6.99/yr) is cancelled. If you're in the middle of a paid period, the cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle. Refunds follow the platform's standard refund policy (App Store / Play Store).
Is this GDPR compliant?
Yes. We delete all personal data (name, email, phone, credentials, preferences). Shared financial records are retained in anonymized form as “Deleted User” — this is permitted under GDPR Article 17(3)(e) for records needed to maintain other users' data integrity.
Can I download my data before deleting?
Yes. The deletion screen offers a full data export in JSON and PDF format. This is your right under data portability regulations.
What if I was in a financial unit?
You're automatically removed from all financial units. If you were the unit lead, the role transfers to the next member. If you were the only member, the unit is dissolved. The standard unit-leaving settlement is offered before the deletion finalizes.
Can a deleted user's data be recovered by law enforcement?
During the 30-day grace period, the data still exists and could be provided under legal obligation. After 30 days, personal data is permanently erased. Only anonymized shared records (“Deleted User”) remain.
